The origins of Rust

Rust started as Graydon Hoare’s part-time side project in 2006 and then became an official Mozilla Research project around 2009 or 2010.

It was officially announced at the Mozilla Annual Summit in 2010 where one of the early uses for it was the experimental Servo browser engine. The 1.0 release happened on May 15, 2015.

Mozilla stewarded the project until late 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic caused the organization to lay off a lot of it’s staff. As of February 8, 2021, Rust is managed by the Rust Foundation.
