John Allspaw on collecting MTTx metrics versus stories about incidents
“If the purpose is to satisfy an audience that is divorced from hands-on work (like leaders or managers) and you want to provide an illusion of how things are going, pick any of the MTT* metrics and severity/frequency/etc. standard stuff. If the purpose is to help other hands-on practitioners better understand things so they might be in better positions in the future to anticipate or handle incidents, then go with collecting stories about the incidents from the people who handled them.”
